We began by seeing surfers practicing in a wave pool outside the airport, surfing is a thing in Munich apparently (of course there are photos). So here is a small picture post from my phone, a real picture post will follow once I've uploaded everything.
We started the day with a walk around the main parts of the city, Marienplatz, Karlsplatz, Sendlinger Tor and so on... at first using the metro was a bit daunting but after 4 days I could do it alone and knew where to go and how to get to important places (I had a good teacher.. thank you Erica). The little lego hearts (above) are glued to walls and buildings all around Munich, quite sweet. We had a coffee at a cool little place called Santo Loco Surf Bar (surfinnnngggg)
After the walk, we had something to eat in an outdoor market called Viktuelenmarkt, where there were a bunch of different places to get drinks or food, or buy fresh produce. I had a wurst, of course delicious. Afterwards, I went back to my hostel and tried to nap a bit, but to no avail... So Erica and I met up again and we went to a university (Technische Universität München) which has a bar on the roof where you can enjoy a Hugo (we did), while watching the sunset (we also did). For reference, Hugo is a delicious drink and you should try if you have an opportunity.
Then we went to Atzinger, and ate some schnitzel, it wasn't too late of a night because the next day we were taking a day trip to Salzburg, Austria, which is actually only 2 hours by train.
So the next morning I met up with Erica and her two friends Montse and Sarah, and we took the train to Salzburg. We walked around and ate lunch by the river, and met some more of her friends from Munich. We had some coffee and cake, a place I don't remember the name of, and also wouldn't because it wasn't the best.. in terms of service. We had a bit of a caketastrophe... However the cake was delicious.
We climbed a big hill up to the castle, enjoyed the emerging sun and talked, and then later took the train back to Munich, met up with Erica's friend Filippo, visiting from Italy, and some British friends he had made and 'acquired' along the way from the hostel (the story was a bit unclear to me) I think they all met on a train. Anyways, the group of us finally got some dinner at Lo Studente which is quite authentically Italian for being in Munich (run by Italians? I think). Delicious pizza and wine, and headed to Lucky Who for some drinks and dancing. Got some expensive mojitos but they were lovely.
The next morning we woke up and met up with Erica's other friend Julia and visited the Lenbachhaus museum which has a lovely garden and an interesting collection to look at. We encountered a bondagey swing installation that you could sit on as well...
Afterwards, we planned to go to the Englischer Garten for a picnic, but the temperamental German weather would not allow, so we went to Viktuelenmarkt for lunch, and went to the garden anyways, got a bit rained on and watched the surfers. For the record, I did not pack appropriately for this weather.
After a busy day, Erica and I made dinner and plans for the next day at her place, and watched The Night at the Museum dubbed in German (interesting) ((entertaining)).
The next morning Erica and I went to Pinakotheke Der Moderne to see some more art, and they have a lot of different things revolving around design, from jewelry to cars. Quite a cool collection. We finally had the weather for a picnic but we were ambushed by bees so we were forced to relocate. Later that day we met up with Montse and went to Dachau and visited the concentration camps which was rather haunting, but valuable to see. Afterwards we went to a festival in Dachau as well, which was sort of like a mini Oktoberfest. I tried a German beer (radler) still not entirely convinced I could drink it.. and tried all sorts of Bavarian specialties, as you can see below we ordered a humongous platter of food.
I was pushed into taking photos with some Germans wearing lederhosen / traditional outfits, thoroughly awkward but entertaining still. Can you feel the awkward through the picture? I do.
Later that night I took a metro late in the night to the airport and after sleeping in trains, airport chairs, benches, planes, I arrived in Palma de Mallorca, and slept on some more benches and chairs until finally.. I arrived in Valencia, meeting Itsaso, Edurne and Axi at the train station.
Until the next one :)
xx
